Traditional vs Education-Minded: Which kind of nanny are you?

Knowing which type describes you best based on your education and experience can help you identify nanny positions that are the best fit possible for you.

So what exactly is the difference between a traditional nanny and an education-minded nanny?

Let’s take a look!

Firstly, we should note that there are some similarities between the two types of nannies. There are childcare tasks that both types of nannies are responsible for.

Traditional Nanny

  • Is the main childcare provider in the home

  • In charge of the children's overall health & well-being

  • Responsible for preparing children's meals, tidying up their bedrooms, etc.

  • Actively engages the children daily in both indoor and outdoor play

  • May occasionally help out with homework

Education-minded Nanny

  • Is the main childcare provider in the home

  • In charge of the children's overall health & well-being

  • Responsible for preparing children's meals, tidying up their bedrooms, etc.

  • Has an education background (ECE, B. Ed., M. Ed.)

  • Is passionate about education and learning

  • Oversees completion of homework and school projects, as needed

  • Actively plans & creates a learning environment to positively influence the children's minds

  • Purposely incorporates learning into the children's everyday activities and playtime

As families decide what type of childcare and/or educational support will suit their family best based on their needs, what's clear is that Nannies with teaching backgrounds and experience, who are passionate about learning, will be in very high demand now and in the future.

Nannies with educational backgrounds and degrees have an advantage over traditional nannies in that they can command higher salaries.

But, even if you don’t have a specific education degree or lack Early Childhood Education training, as a traditional nanny you can upgrade your skills through online and in-person learning. Over time, you’ll be able to gain the experience you need so you too can earn more.

So, make a plan and work towards gaining that educational experience if that’s what you’re naturally inclined towards.
